Hi, I’m Beth and I’m a chocoholic. While I am being candid I will confess that I am a carboholic, too.
I like good foods, lean proteins and vegetables, and I know not everyone reading this has acquired a similar appetite for the foods that are good for type 2s. And many of you relate to my next statement. I LOVE all the bad foods. ALL OF THEM! From sweet, decadent desserts to salty, savory snacks. If it is high in sugar and high in carbs my cravings are off the charts.
Don’t think I am just coming to this realization. Oh no, I have known for years, probably even decades, that the foods I crave have control over me. And being a type 2 hasn’t diminished those cravings if anything they are more prevalent.
In fact, today I ate fun size candy bars for lunch. Yes, plural. Five Snickers bars, two Twix, and a Milkyway… to be specific. Yes, I, a type 2 diabetic. An advocate for all things healthy and good. A recovering chocoholic and carbaoholic. Gave into my cravings.
I have been doing so well with my diet and overcoming my sugar addiction. Moments after devouring that last bite, the disappointment and conviction set in. How could I have made such a poor choice?!
Here I am at a fork in the road. From this point I could give in to my self loathing and claim defeat, continuing down a path of sugary, carb filled, poor choices. Or, I could choose a path of understanding and learn from my mistakes.
If you start to feel yourself slip, you have made that poor choice, take a deep breath. Don’t allow yourself to start down the slippery slope of continued bad choices. Regain control, shove those wrappers deep down into the trash can, and move forward with your focus back on your goals. And my goodness throw out those candy bars.
When my cravings come at me with a vengeance I find that drinking water or stepping away to take a short walk will help me refocus. Keeping healthy snack alternatives will also help lead you to better choices.
How are you defeating your cravings?
